What do you get when you combine 90+ years of track and field tradition with a state of the art facility, top-notch meet management, and top athletes from throughout the state?  You get the West Cost Relays.  The West Coast Relays, hosted by Buchanan High School in Clovis California, again figures to be a significant stop on this year's schedule with a great line-up of competitors.

The girls 100 meter hurdles features Pattriana Perry of Vacaville, who's 13.98 is the #1 wind legal mark in the state (#2 all conditions).  Pattriana could be challenged by teammate Daria Cook and Liberty's Morganne Hill, both of whom have gone under 15 seconds this season.  Their roles may be reversed in the 300 hurdles where Hill holds the state's #3 time of 43.26, while Perry looks to be the most likely challenger.

The boys hurdles will also be a barn burner, with Kamara Biawogi of Prospect the top seed in both races.  He owns the state's #9 time of 14.85 in the 110's, while he has run a CA #3 in the 300 hurdles at 38.09.  Sam Peters of Amador Valley is a serious challenger, with a best of 38.71 (CA #6) this season.

The girls high jump features four of the top 10 girls in the state, lead by Briahn Brown of St. Mary's who has jumped 5-08 this season.  Challengers include Edison's Maciah Murray, Stockdale's Asia Chesley, and Clovis West's Lyndsey Lopes.

In the boys distance races, Blake Haney of Stockdale figures prominently as an entry in all three distances (800,1600, and 3200).  Haney is the state leader both the 1600 and the 3200, where he currently sits solidly not only as CA #1, but as US #3 after his amazing 8:48 last week at Arcadia.  While the 3200 looks to be a safe bet for Haney, his most likely challenger in the 1600 is Cody Brazeal of host Buchanan High School.  Brazeal has a 4:07 1600 to his credit from last season, it's just a question of how close he is to that form now.

Although Hagen Reedy of Buchanan is listed in the entries, we received late word that she likely won't compete.  That leaves Jena Pianin of  Amador Valley as the top girls distance competitor - a returning state finalist with a 3200 best of 10:40.21.

The boys high jump looks just as deep, with four competitors over 6' 6" this season including Danny Shellworth of Vacaville, Taylor Smith of host school Buchanan, Darius Armstead of Mt. Whitney, and LJ Moore of Central.

In the throws, look to both the girls shot put and discus to produce some elite performances.  In the Shot, Nikki Okwelogu of Clovis West leads that pack coming in at 46-04 (CA #4), followed closely by Madison Jacobs of Arroyo Grande at 44-10 (CA#6). Other serious challengers include Amarie Bremel of Kingsburg. In the discus, the names and order are the same with Okwelogu at 158-10 (CA #2), Jacobs at 151-00 (CA #4), and Bremel at 147-10 (CA #5).

The boys shot is also ripe for top performances with veterans Matthew Esparza of Amador Valley and Kevin Sundberg of Fowler in the field.  Sundberg has a best of 56-06 this season, and Esparza looks to break the 60 foot barrier with a seasonal best of 59-06.25.

Both pole vault competitions include several of the state's elite, with Adam Thomas of Benicia headlining on the boys side with a CA #5 vault of 15-08 this season.  Adam is chased by Joey Reeves of Arroyo Grande, Ryan Pust of Golden Valley, Brad Beekman of Clovis East, all of whom have clear 15 feet this season.  On the girls side, the 12 foot + duo from Presentation of Taylore Jaques and Emma McCarthy are the co-favorites.
